What we check

- Your onboard computer (OBD-II) on most 2000-and-newer vehicles
- Tailpipe emissions on older vehicles, generally 1999 and earlier

- Your DMV registration renewal notice says a smog check is required

- A vehicle is being registered in California for the first time

How long does a smog check take?
Most smog inspections are a short visit. The exact time depends on your vehicle and how busy we are. Walk-ins are welcome, so you do not need to book.
What should I bring to a smog check?
Bring your registration or DMV renewal notice, if you have it, and a way to pay. The renewal notice is helpful but not required.
Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?
No. An illuminated check engine light is an automatic smog check failure. Have the issue diagnosed and repaired first, then come in for your test.
Do trucks, SUVs and vans need smog checks?
Most gasoline-powered light-duty trucks, SUVs and vans follow the same rules as cars. Check the smog check guide for exemptions or call 424-354-6111.
Is a hybrid exempt from smog?
Not automatically. Hybrids generally follow the same smog rules as other gasoline vehicles. Fully electric vehicles are exempt.
