What it is
California requires smog checks to reduce vehicle pollution. Gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles that are 8 model years old or newer are exempt from the renewal smog check. Instead, the owner pays a smog abatement fee with the registration. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) currently lists the fee at $25 per year, and says most of it goes into a state fund that supports clean-vehicle programs.
Where you see it
It appears on your DMV registration renewal notice. It is paid to the DMV, not to a smog station, so Blaze Smog and other stations do not collect it.
How it differs from other smog fees
- Smog abatement fee: paid to the DMV with your registration when a newer vehicle skips its renewal smog check.
- Smog transfer fee: paid to the DMV when a vehicle under 4 model years old changes owners without a smog check.
- Certificate fee: the state fee charged when your vehicle passes a smog check. BAR currently lists it at $8.25.
- Station test price: what the shop charges for the inspection itself.
When does the fee stop?
You pay the fee while your vehicle is exempt. Add eight to the model year to find when the first renewal smog check is due. A 2020 model-year vehicle, for example, is first due in 2028. When your renewal notice says a smog check is required, you will need a passing result to renew, and the abatement fee no longer applies for that cycle.
Do diesels pay it?
Diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer do not get the newer-vehicle exemption, so this fee does not replace a smog check for them.
Is it optional?
No. It is part of registration, and the DMV will not complete a renewal without it. Amounts can change, so always read the amounts on your renewal notice.
