Why there is no single price
California does not set one price for a smog check. Every station chooses its own price, and it can vary by vehicle type, model year and the kind of test your vehicle needs. That is why the same smog check can cost different amounts from one shop to the next.
What is included in the total
- The station’s test price: the shop’s charge for performing the inspection.
- The state certificate fee: charged when your vehicle passes. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) currently lists it at $8.25. Ask whether a shop includes it in its posted price.
- Retest cost: some shops include a free or discounted retest, and others charge full price again.
What can change your price
- Vehicle type: diesels and heavier trucks or vans can cost more than a standard passenger car.
- Test type: older gasoline vehicles may need a tailpipe test, which is different from a computer scan on newer vehicles.
- Location and demand: prices vary by shop and neighborhood.
Fees that are not part of the smog check
If you own a newer gasoline vehicle that skips the renewal smog check, you pay a smog abatement fee with your registration instead. BAR lists it at $25 per year. When a newer vehicle changes owners without a smog check, a smog transfer fee goes to the DMV. These are separate from what a station charges.
How to avoid surprises
- Ask for the total price, including the certificate fee, before you hand over the keys.
- Ask what happens if the vehicle fails: is a retest free, discounted or full price?
- Check for coupons. Many shops post smog check coupons online.
- Do not choose only on price. A shop that explains the results clearly is worth a few dollars.
