Exempt because of age or fuel type
California smog checks are built around the emissions equipment on a vehicle, so some vehicles are left out entirely. According to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) and the DMV, these are exempt:
- Gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles from model year 1975 and older
- Diesel vehicles from model year 1997 and older
- Diesel vehicles over 14,000 lbs gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
- Fully electric vehicles
- Motorcycles and trailers
Newer gasoline vehicles: the 8-year rule
Gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles that are 8 model years old or newer do not need a smog check when you renew your registration. Instead, the state charges a smog abatement fee. To find when your first renewal smog check is due, add eight to the model year. A 2020 model-year vehicle, for example, is first due in 2028.
Newer vehicles and change of ownership: the 4-year rule
A separate, shorter rule covers selling a vehicle. A gasoline vehicle that is less than 4 model years old does not need a smog check when it changes owners. The buyer pays a smog transfer fee to the DMV instead.
Diesels are different
The newer-vehicle exemption applies to gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles. Diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer that weigh 14,000 lbs GVWR or less need a smog check and do not get a newer-model-year exemption. Read our diesel smog check page for details.
Are hybrids exempt?
No. A hybrid follows the same rules as a gasoline vehicle: the same 8-year and 4-year exemptions for newer models, and a smog check once it ages out. Only fully electric vehicles are exempt.
Family transfers
Moving a vehicle between close family members does not require a smog check. There is a catch. The DMV says that if a family member gave you a car they bought for you without first putting it in their own name, a smog inspection is required. Confirm your situation with the DMV before you transfer.
Does where I live matter?
Yes. The DMV requires smog checks at registration renewal in 33 California counties, including Los Angeles County, where Redondo Beach, Lawndale and Hawthorne are located. A few rural counties are outside that renewal program. Ownership transfers and first-time California registrations have their own rules.
The safest way to check
