A failed smog check is fixable. Here is what it usually means, what to do next and how to get through your retest quickly.
What to do after a failed smog test
- Read the results. Your smog report lists what failed. Keep the report.
- Get it diagnosed. Take it to a trusted repair shop with the results in hand.
- Drive it. After repairs, drive normally so the computer can finish its self-checks.
- Come back for a retest. Walk in to Blaze Smog. No appointment needed.
How to pass smog next time
- Make sure the check engine light is off
- Drive at least 15 minutes to warm the engine and catalytic converter
- Tighten or replace a worn gas cap
- Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery right before your test

Why did my car fail the smog check?
Common reasons include an illuminated check engine light, a faulty oxygen sensor, a worn catalytic converter, an EVAP or gas cap leak, or high emissions from a tune-up that is overdue.
Can a car pass smog with the check engine light on?
No. A lit check engine light is an automatic failure. Get the code read and the problem repaired, then come back for a retest.
I just fixed my car or disconnected the battery. Can I test right away?
Not always. After a repair, code reset or battery disconnect, the onboard computer needs to complete its self-checks, called readiness monitors, which can take some driving. Testing too soon can cause a failure.
Is there help paying for smog repairs?
The State of California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair runs a Consumer Assistance Program that may help eligible drivers with repair costs or vehicle retirement. Visit the BAR website for eligibility.
