California has some of the strictest emissions rules in the country, so a vehicle from another state usually has to pass a California smog check before it can be registered here. That includes cars you bring with you and vehicles you buy from out of state.
How to get your out-of-state car registered
- Check whether your vehicle is exempt by age, fuel type or weight
- Get a smog check at Blaze Smog. Walk-ins welcome
- Finish your registration with the DMV using your passing smog certificate
Remember, a smog certificate is generally valid for 90 days, so time your test close to your DMV visit.

Do I need a smog check to register an out-of-state car in California?
In most cases yes. A vehicle coming from another state generally needs to pass a California smog check before you can register it, unless it is exempt by age, fuel type or weight.
What if my out-of-state car is new?
